Kristin Fields grew up in Queens, which she likes to think of as a small town next to a very big city. Kristin studied writing at Hofstra University, where she was mentored by Martha McPhee and Julia Fierro. In 2007, she was awarded the Eugene Schneider Award for Short Fiction for her story, In a Teacup. Kristin spent the next five years not writing and found herself working at a historic farm museum, belly dancing, teaching English, teaching teenagers how to write and dance, and designing educational programs for train enthusiasts. Kristin read once that Monarch butterflies continue the journey their ancestors began long before, and enjoys exploring that theme in her writing.
